Moving to the UAE

Moving to another country, regardless of its location or population, is bound to be a bit of a culture shock. Fortunately, the UAE has it’s fair share of ‘home comforts’ to soften the blow, and for many long-term expatriates, it has grown into a ‘home from home’ that they may never want to leave.

If you’re considering relocating to the UAE, read up on the region, check out the facts and figures and make sure it’s going to work for you. Here are just a few cultural essentials to know about this pearl in the desert we call the United Arab Emirates.

  • The UAE is under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
  • The official religion in the UAE is Islam. Although other Western and Eastern religions are permitted and embraced in this cosmopolitan region. While there are many mosques in the Emirates, the UAE accommodates other places of worship such as churches and temples.
  • The population is almost 2.5million, with only 20% UAE Nationals, and the remaining being expatriates from all over the world.
  • The official language of the UAE is Arabic with English commonly spoken among most nationalities, and Hindi, Farsi and Urdu also widely used.
  • With its desert climate, the summer temperatures can reach mid-high 40’s in the summer with humidity up to 80%, while the winters are far milder but rarely dropping below the low 20’s. Rain is rare, but the majority of rainfall will be between December and March.
  • The standard working week runs Sunday through to Thursday, with a two-day weekend on Friday and Saturday.
